Kostya intercepted her in front of the institute.

“Where were you?”

“Don’t push it,” Sasha hissed. “Did you forget the boycott?”

“Fuck this boycott! Where were you, Samokhina? Coach is marking you down for absences!”

Sasha shuddered. The mere thought of attending Coach’s classes made her nauseated.

She morphed her fear into anger.

“Why do you care? Get out of my way, you are nobody to me!”

Kostya paled and took a step back. Walking up to the fourth floor, Sasha cursed herself: She had become quite a shrew. A malicious asshole, ready to gnaw a helpful hand. Even the sincerest sympathy, the strongest friendship couldn’t possibly survive it. Out of the goodness of her generous heart, Sasha was about to scorch the earth around her, making the Coach-imposed boycott a natural attitude toward that bitch Samokhina.

She knocked on the door of auditorium 14, waited for the invitation, then entered. Nine and a half minutes had passed since the start of the session.

“Hello. I am late.”

Sterkh motioned for her to sit down, steepled his fingers, and looked at her distantly.

“Nikolay Valerievich,” Sasha said. “You can hit me. I won’t resist.”

“If I thought it would help, I wouldn’t care about your resistance,” Sterkh said pensively.

He placed his chin on his steepled fingers and gazed at her across the desk. His pupils were tiny, like poppy seeds.

“So? Did you make the world better?”

Sasha managed a crooked smile. He didn’t have to hit her when she was down.

“Sorry,” he said curtly. “We’ll count your antics as a practical lesson. But what are you going to do about Analytical Specialty?”
